Many occupants of the five apartments in the building had already evacuated when firefighters arrived, Werner said. Others were helped from the building by fire department personnel.
The fire extended into the attic space and a second alarm was requested and dispatched, Werner said. The fire was declared under control about 3:50 a.m.
Utilities to the building were disconnected and the building, valued at $296,300, was deemed a total loss. Investigators estimated damage to contents of the building at $50,000.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
