INDIANAPOLIS -- As many drivers expect to hit the road this weekend to get in some holiday shopping, drivers in Indianapolis will run into major construction.
Starting Thursday night, drivers who travel on Interstate 69 on the northeast side will encounter lane and ramp closures.
"A lot of shifting of traffic, but a lot of this is going to be hitting a really big milestone that we're really excited about," said Kyleigh Cramer with INDOT.
Starting at 9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, only the right lane will be open on I-69 south at 96th Street. Three ramps will close, including the one from Interstate 465 east to I-69 north, and there will be no access to Binford Boulevard from I-69 north or south.
Then, at 11 p.m. Friday, the ramp from 106th Street to I-69 south will be closed. All of those closures are expected to reopen by 6 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 9.
The ramp from I-69 south to I-465 south will also be closed, but is expected to reopen Sunday, Dec. 8 at noon.
Starting Monday, things will look a lot different.
"Driving behavior is going to change a little bit. It's going to be new pavements, new routes also new ramps are opening too, so just letting folks know to plan ahead, give themselves a little bit extra time as they head to their destination," said Cramer.
Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead or expect delays.
While it may be a headache now, INDOT says the finished project will make a big difference for drivers.
"It is a short span of time to for us to be hitting a huge milestone, so these significant ramp and lane closures are needed to shift I-69 southbound traffic onto three new bridges and open up 82nd Street ramps," said Cramer.
