TRUMBULL -- More than $7,700 has been raised through GoFundMe to help pay medical bills for a Nichols Fire Department captain with Stage 4 kidney failure, according to the department.
Capt. Jason DeManche "urgently needs a kidney transplant due to Stage 4 kidney failure that follows 16 years of a Lupus diagnosis," the Nichols Fire Department said on its website.
In a post online, DeManche's family said they are seeking a compatible living kidney donor.
"Sadly, he now finds himself in need as he battles this life-threatening condition. Jason has always been the rock of our family -- a constant source of strength, wisdom, and love. But now, he needs our support more than ever," his family said in a post online.
Anyone interested in donating can reach out to the Center for Living Organ Donors at the Yale New Haven Transplantation Center, the family said.
The fire department held a boot drive Saturday morning to collect money for DeManche, according to a Facebook post.
DeManche, a volunteer firefighter for more than 25 years, oversees operations at Station 1 as house captain. In a post, the department said DeManche "continues to be a guide and mentor to everyone" at the department.
"Jason has done and will continue to do so much for Nichols, that we feel it's our duty to encourage as many people as possible to step up and also contribute," the department said.
