King's Worcester win their tenth Modus Challenge Cup triumphing 29-19 over RGS

KING'S WORCESTER retained the Modus Challenge Cup, with a 29-19 win over RGS.

In a tight game, which saw both sides take the lead at points, King's held strong and won their tenth title in the competition.

RGS were ready for the game right from the off. They received the ball from kick-off, before sending it up the other end. A spilled pass saw the side pounce on the chance and force the ball over the line to go up almost instantly.

Secker broke through the defence to put RGS up, with the conversion calmly taken - giving them a 7-0 lead.

King's grew into the game from this point out. Hawes scored with the sides' first real possession of the game. He picked the ball up from a scrum and broke through RGS' defensive line to finish in the corner.

The side could not draw level with a tough conversion, but the game was well and truly on.

King's came again soon after, capitalising on a knock-on just in front of RGS' try line. A brief defensive spell saw the ball bundled over the try line by Dorrell. The ensuing conversion saw King's take the lead 12-7.

King's went further up in the last few minutes of the first half. Waves of attack were initially kept out by a stalwart RGS defence, before Mason was able to break through and touch the ball down to send his side up by 10 points going in to the half.

RGS came out into the second half on a mission. They dominated play for the opening minutes, and were rewarded for their efforts - bringing the game back within five - as Griffiths converted a strong line out drive.

The try was not converted with the wind against the kicker, but RGS was back in touching distance of the reigning champions.

RGS continued their dominance and looked to equalise through the same means soon after. A high line out saw Secker score his second, powering past the defensive line and squaring everything up.

There were no mistakes from the kick this time as RGS took the lead 19-17.

With just six minutes to go, King's turned up when it mattered. They ramped up their attacking pressure, with Horsfall eventually breaking through to give them the lead going into the final minutes. The conversion was taken successfully, increasing the score to 24-19 in King's favour.

King's regained their ten-point lead with a second soon after. Mason scored his second in a five-minute double for King's and reinstated the strong lead. The conversion ultimately went wide, but the try all but confirmed victory for King's.

A late flurry from RGS wasn't enough to change the outcome and King's ultimately ran home with the win, picking up their tenth title in the competition and retaining from last season.
