DETROIT -- The Michigan Court of Appeals issued a 3-0 opinion Wednesday upholding a sentence imposed on a woman who was convicted in connection with her father's death, according to the Associated Press. Megan Imirowicz, 21, was convicted in 2023 by a jury on a charge of use of harmful devices/irritants causing death and was later sentenced to one year in jail.
However, Imirowicz was immediately released from custody after her sentence was issued because she had already spent 17 months in custody before her trial. Although sentencing guidelines called for a minimum sentence of four years in prison, Oakland County Judge Victoria Valentine elected to issue a lighter sentence, citing Imirowicz's age, lack of maturity and likelihood of rehabilitation, the AP reports.
Konrad Imirowicz, 64, died five months after his daughter threw lye -- a chemical drain cleaner -- on him while he was sleeping. Prosecutors alleged that in October 2021, Megan Imirowicz was upset with her father because he was drunk and unable to take her to a hair appointment ahead of her 18th birthday party.
After being attacked with the chemical, Konrad Imirowicz eventually required kidney dialysis, a tracheotomy and had both legs amputated.
