Folsom PD to conduct DUI checkpoint to prevent impaired driving

(FOX40.COM) -- The Folsom Police Department announced in a Facebook post that they will be conducting a driving under the influence (DUI) checkpoint.

Folsom PD said this will take place on Dec. 18 during the evening hours in an undisclosed location in the city.

Per California law, it is a requirement that checkpoints be announced ahead of time but agencies are not required to give out the precise location.

"Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk," Sergeant Tim Galovich said.

DUI checkpoint locations have been determined based on the data that shows the number of incidents of impaired driving were the cause of crashes, Folsom PD said.

Funding for the checkpoint programs has been provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Sergeant Galovic said, "Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improves traffic safety."

Drivers who have been charged with a first-time DUI could be fined and penalized several thousand dollars, as well as have their license suspended.

The first checkpoint was started in 1984 in Burlingame, According to casetext.com

At the time of the checkpoint, every fifth car was stopped and law enforcement screened for various indicators of intoxication. Some drivers felt that this was a violation of the U.S. Constitution's Fourth Amendment, which states that it shall protect citizens from unreasonable searches and seizures.
