Four people were injured after a vehicle crashing into a bakery in Torrington on Friday.

Officers responded to the area of Main Street at Pearl Street around 11:45 a.m. Friday for the report of a motor vehicle crash, according to Sgt. Kyle Johnson of the Torrington Police Department.

Officers found that a vehicle was traveling east on Pearl Street when it crashed into Rosa Vega Bakery, located at 266 Main Street, Johnson said.

According to Chief David Casper of the Torrington Fire Department, firefighters arrived at the scene at 11:47 a.m. to find a vehicle completely in the building with extensive debris and a natural gas leak.

Two people in the store got out of the building before the arrival of fire personnel, Casper said. Firefighters worked to extricate a third person from the store as well as the driver of the vehicle. According to Casper, there were "serious injuries to multiple patients and the building sustained significant damage."

LifeStar was called to the scene as the driver and three others were transported to area hospitals. The degree of their injuries was unknown at this time.

Torrington firefighters worked in partnership with Torrington police, Trinity Ambulance, Hartford HealthCare paramedics and Winsted Ambulance. The Torrington Fire Marshal's Office, Building Inspector and Eversource Gas were also on the scene, and additional firefighters were called in to provide city coverage.

The cause of crash is still under investigation, Johnson said. Main Street, East Pearl Street and Pearl Street were closed in the area of the intersection while the investigation was being conducted.
