Instagram Quietly Rolls Out Scheduled DMs -- But There's a Catch

You can schedule a message on Instagram up to 29 days beforehand, but it can only contain text.

Instagram will now let you schedule direct messages (DMs) on the app to be sent at a later time.

The new feature was spotted on the app and then shared on Threads over the weekend. Meta later confirmed to TechCrunch that the feature is indeed rolling out to all users worldwide.

To schedule a DM, just type out the message and hold down the blue "Send" button. Then, choose your desired date and time and let Instagram do the rest. You can schedule multiple messages for an account or chat group. The time zone will be based on your device's settings, and you can currently schedule a message up to 29 days in advance.

To view your queued messages, open a conversation and tap the new "scheduled messages" tab at the bottom. While testing, we found that Instagram doesn't yet offer the option to edit a scheduled text. However, you can tap and hold a scheduled text to send it immediately, copy it, or delete it.

Instagram's support page mentions that the feature has one major limitation: It can only support text. If you want to share memes, posts, stories, photos, videos, or GIFs, you'll still have to send those in real-time. Scheduled DMs could be useful for influencers and celebrities, who may run fan channels or group chats through Instagram. Influencers could also use the DMs to send their followers messages about the latest item they're promoting at a specific time.

For everyday users, it's a feature you could use to send reminders, birthday wishes, or messages you want to send but might forget to send later if you don't schedule them. But scheduled messages could also make Instagram feel more automated and further enable spam.

Last month, Instagram added a location-sharing option to its DM feature that let you share your location with a friend or a group for up to one hour. It also added new stickers and the option to add nicknames to make your chats more personalized.
