AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Ahead of the Austin City Council meeting happening Thursday, a city memo from the deputy director of the Austin Convention Center redevelopment project is asking for council to approve extended hours for construction. The extended work hours will get the demolition phase of the project done in less time, according to the memo.

In October 2023, city council approved contracts for the redevelopment project, with the convention center scheduled to close on April 1, 2025. Then, the demolition of the building is set to begin May 1, 2025, with construction completion anticipated for December 2028, according to the city of Austin.

According to the city, the new convention center will open in 2029.

The convention center hosts large events in Austin, including events during the South by Southwest festival (SXSW). The purpose of the project is to expand the size of the convention center to make it more competitive, the city said in news release in May 2023. The convention currently has 376,000 square feet of rentable space.

Construction for the demolition will happen seven days a week, with an agreement among stakeholders and the project team for construction to start at 6 a.m. and wrap each day by 9 p.m. However, the project team has since met with those stakeholders, the hotels, businesses and residents, to discuss the extension of those hours to end at 10:30 p.m., according to the memo.

The extended hours would reduce the duration of the demolition by around 20%, which the memo said is projected to be a reduction from 18 months to 14 months.

The groups also discussed finding ways to mitigate noise when working with construction machinery, which "separates, gathers, grades, loads, or unloads sand, rock, or gravel," the memo said.
