Disney Requests 60-Day Extension to Update Rivers of America 'Cars' Permit

The Central Florida Tourism Oversight District, on behalf of Walt Disney World, has requested a 60-day extension to update their permit regarding the transformation of the Rivers of America in Magic Kingdom into a "Cars" area.

The extension request was penned by the District's Sr. Water Resource Engineer, Mandee Brandt, and simply states, "An extension of 60 days is requested for the above referenced application to allow the applicant additional time to prepare a response to the RAI dated September 11, 2024."

Disney filed a permit with the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) on August 12. SFWMD responded a month later with a six-page Request for Additional Information (RAI). They asked for clarifications and 20 adjustments to the permit.

Disney did not immediately respond, prompting SFWMD to send a notice that they had 10 days to update the permit or it would be denied.

The permit regards basin stormwater modifications required for construction at Tom Sawyer Island, Rivers of America, and laydown yards in the surrounding area.

The island and rivers will be transformed into a "Cars" expansion to Frontierland. It will include two attractions: a rally race through the mountains possibly using the same system as Radiator Springs Racers in Cars Land at Disney California Adventure and a family attraction. Disney previously said construction would begin in early 2025.
