SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- A nationwide E. coli outbreak from organic carrots has impacted the San Diego area.

One local person became sick from the same strain of Shiga Toxin producing E. coli, according to the County of San Diego.

Health officials are urging people to throw away whole bagged and baby organic carrots sold under multiple brands by Grimmway Farms.

"If you or a loved one are feeling sick, contact your doctor as soon as possible," said Ankita Kadakia, M.D., interim County public health officer. "The Shiga toxin producing E. Coli bacteria can cause serious kidney problems that require hospitalization, so it is important to get care promptly."

Symptoms can occur within three to four days that include stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting.

One person has died from the outbreak, while 39 cases, 15 of those resulting in hospitalizations, have been reported in 18 states.

The county says while the carrots are likely no longer sold in stores, they may be in your home.

Throw away any affected carrots and be sure to thoroughly clean down surfaces that touched the vegetables.
