Driver attacked by man after refusing to give him ride to Tampa: police

CLEARWATER, Fla. (WFLA) -- A Tampa man was arrested early Friday morning after police said he pulled out a "large piece of metal" and attacked a driver who refused to give him a ride.

Officers with the Clearwater Police Department said they were called to the On The Fly convenience store on Gulf to Bay Boulevard after receiving a report of an attempted carjacking.

A driver was pumping gas around midnight when he said he was approached by a man asking for a ride to Tampa. However, the driver reportedly refused to take him anywhere.

That's when police said the man, later identified as 44-year-old Brian L. Davis, tried to get into the driver's car, and a fight ensued.

During the struggle, Davis reportedly took out what police described as a "large piece of metal" and began swinging it around.

A friend of the driver had been inside the store when the fight broke out but came to help after seeing what was happening, officials reported.

However, Davis reportedly continued to assault the driver, eventually taking out a knife.

After receiving the 911 call, officers quickly arrived at the convenience store and arrested Davis, the police department said. He was booked into the Pinellas County Jail and charged with armed carjacking, aggravated assault and criminal mischief.

Authorities said the driver sustained minor injuries and was treated by medics at the scene.
