The Sandman explores humanity through the lens of gods and otherworldly beings with myth, horror and existential musings. With great storytelling and stellar performances, the show brought his beloved creation to life, captivating audiences worldwide, but not captivating HBO's attention enough.
HBO turned down The Sandman during its years of development, understandably unsure about how to adapt the comic's sprawling, surreal series into a cohesive television narrative. Concerns over budget and its unconventional storytelling further stalled their interest, leading to Netflix eventually picking the show up in their place. Netflix's The Sandman delivers a visually stunning and narratively ambitious adaptation. It became a hit in 2022, showing HBO exactly how it's done.

Party Down is probably one of the most underrated comedies on television, unfortunately canceled after two seasons in 2010, possibly due to low ratings. But the cult show was still received very positively. However, HBO didn't think the series stood a chance. HBO passed on Party Down in favor of other comedy projects, reportedly uncertain about the show's understated style and niche appeal. Starz seized the opportunity, and the series became a cult hit for its sharp humor and relatable portrayal of struggling artists.
Debuting in 2009, Party Down follows a group of aspiring actors and writers working dead-end catering jobs in Los Angeles while waiting for their big break. With a cast featuring Adam Scott, Lizzy Caplan and Jane Lynch, the show combined biting wit and heartfelt moments to deliver a unique workplace comedy. Despite its short initial run, its clever writing and quirky charm won a loyal fan base, eventually leading to a short-lived revival in 2023. The network could have explored lesser-known aspects of J.R.R. Tolkien's rich lore, such as the First Age of Middle-earth, the rise of Morgoth or the forging of the Rings of Power. With its history of developing intricate worlds and morally complex characters, HBO could have delved deeply into the politics, alliances, and betrayals that shaped Middle-earth's history.

Created by Vince Gilligan, Breaking Bad is widely considered to be one of the greatest television shows of all time. Starring the immensely talented Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul, the show tells the fascinating tale of Walter White. Having recently been diagnosed with cancer and facing his mortality, the former chemistry teacher chooses to "break bad" and recruit his former student, Jesse Pinkman, to create a drug empire that reigns over Albuquerque for years.
The show had a slow start but eventually became the massive success it is today. Gilligan initially pitched the show to HBO, seeing as it was a fitting show for the network in terms of content and style. However, Gilligan recalls the meeting going very horribly. "They wouldn't even grace us with a 'no.' They were basically like, 'Just get out of the office, please.' The person we were pitching to could not have been less interested." Luckily for audiences, and for AMC, Breaking Bad has become an international success and is still being recognized today as one of the greatest shows of all time.
