Indiana Fever Star Involved In Fight During Overseas Game

Many WNBA players have taken their talents overseas during the offseason. Among those include a few Indiana Fever players: guard Kelsey Mitchell, who signed with the Shanxi Flame, and forward NaLyssa Smith, who joined the Zhejiang Golden Bulls, both of which are part of the Women's Chinese Basketball Association (WCBA).

During a recent preseason game, Smith, the No. 2 pick in the 2022 WNBA draft, was involved in a minor fight with an opposing player.

Smith, seen donning the same No. 1 she wears with the Fever along with her classic headband look, received a slight shove from her opponent as a three-point shot was made by her teammate.

The former Baylor Bears star took exception, grabbing the ball and throwing it at her opponent. The opposing player responded with a harder throw at Smith, sparking a brief confrontation. Teammates quickly stepped in to separate them, preventing the incident from escalating further.

According to Dallas Wings center Kalani Brown, who played with Smith at Baylor, seven technicals were issued during the game, likely due to the altercation above.

In her third season with Indiana, Smith had the worst statistical output of her WNBA career. The forward averaged 10.6 points and 7.1 rebounds while playing in all 40 of the Fever's regular season games.

Although Smith averaged just under 25 minutes per contest in the regular season, Indiana coach Christie Sides elected not to utilize the star in the postseason, playing Smith in just 13 minutes through two games against the Connecticut Sun during the first round of the WNBA playoffs.

Smith will be entering the final season of her four-year, $318,649 rookie deal with Indiana in 2025 after the team picked up her option in April. However, the question remains if Smith will actually return to Indianapolis following the 2024 season.
