The Celtics and Cavaliers will face off Tuesday night in a highly anticipated matchup at TD Garden between the two best teams in the Eastern Conference. The game also carries major implications for the NBA Cup as the Celtics look to keep their chances of advancing to the knockout round alive with a win. Here's a look where things currently stand in the East Group C standings entering Tuesday night:
The winner of Group C will automatically advance to the quarterfinals while one other wildcard team will qualify in each conference based on point differential. The Celtics are fairly well positioned on the point differential front if they were to win out thanks to a slim loss to the Hawks last Tuesday. However, one more loss in any remaining NBA Cup game would essentially eliminate their chances of advancing.
Here's a look at the remaining schedule for pool play for the Celtics
If the Celtics do manage to beat the Cavs on Tuesday night, the next major matchup of interest would be the Hawks-Cavs tilt on Nov. 29. Atlanta holds a head-to-head tiebreaker over the Celtics so if they win that one, they would be in pole position to win the group. However, a Cavs win over the Hawks would open the door for a three-way tie between the Celtics, Cavs and Hawks at the top of the group. In that scenario, here are the tiebreakers in order for group play in the NBA Cup.
Those tiebreakers won't matter at all if the Celtics don't win out though and the work for them begins Tuesday night as they try to slow down the hottest team in the NBA at TD Garden.
