A Bryan man was arrested Monday after taking a traffic safety truck for an unauthorized drive around an area of roadwork.
Marcus Jones has been charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. According to the police report, Jones took a traffic safety truck, valued at $150,000, from an empty lot at the intersection of William J. Bryan and Villa Maria.
Jones was seen getting into the truck, belonging to the Larry Young Paving Company on Monday morning by the project supervisor. Jones, who had asked for work at the company in the past but was never hired, used a dummy key already in the ignition to move the truck, but the actual keys were hidden in an overhead compartment inside the truck.
Another witness working on the site saw Jones wearing a hard hat as he entered the truck and drove it westbound on Villa Maria around the construction zone and then began traveling east on William J. Bryan before parking the truck in the coned off section of the road in the 1700 block of William J. Bryan. Jones activated the safety lights and lowered the truck's safety device before leaving the truck. He is reported to have told witnesses he forgot his safety vest before continuing on to the intersection of William J. Bryan and Nash.

Police were able to contact Jones at his home on Pinon Court. Jones told police he had gotten permission to drive the truck from an employee but he was not able to name which employee when asked.
Jones was taken to the county jail and charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. As of Tuesday afternoon, he remained in jail on a $5,000 bond. Unauthorized use of a motor vehicle is a state jail felony in Texas punishable by 180 days to two years in jail and up to a $10,000 fine.
