KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. -- With many options for buying items online from people you don't know, the Knox County Sheriff's Office Digital Intelligence Unit has created a way for people to add more protection during their transactions.

KCSO launched a new program called "Safe Exchange." It is designed for those who have purchased goods online from Facebook Marketplace or something similar and need a safe place to meet for the exchange.

Here's how it would work.

The buyer would need to find the "Safe Exchange" sign in the parking lot and meet the seller under KCSO surveillance. The cameras are not monitored in real-time but they are recording. The cameras are in Walmart parking lots at Halls, Clinton Highway, Chapman Highway, Parkside Drive and Walker Springs locations.

"This is one way technology can assist in safety," KCSO Chief Deputy Bernie Lyon said. "Many of us love Marketplace and other online sales platforms; this is just an extra layer of security for those purchases. Sheriff Spangler and I appreciate everyone's hard work in getting this program up and running before Christmas, and as always, we appreciate Walmart being a great community partner."
