Classroom Champions: Charleston teacher wants to take students on Ravenel Bridge visit

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - A Charleston County teacher is looking to give her students an experience many of them have never done before even though the destination is practically right outside their door.

Willa McGirth-Singleton Singleton has been teaching for 35 years, and five of those have been at Sanders-Clyde Elementary School.

She says the field trip could help them apply what they are learning with science and engineering to real life.

"I love it. I just can't imagine not doing it. The children bring me so much joy every day," McGirth-Singleton says.

Not only does she teach, but she's also an author. She wrote her own book, "Andrew Dennis Harper Davis" with inspiration from her son and his journey with ADHD. She has since written a second book, "Andrew Dennis Harper Davis and His Favorite Girl, Laila."

"It's been a great experience, I've been able to do book signings, and readings and going to elementary schools and talking to children about ADHD," she said.

With a busy schedule and motivated students, she wants to take her class on a field trip over to the Ravenel Bridge, a follow-up lesson after her students do a project on nature and bridge engineering.

"This will be a great chance for them to take what they have been learning in science about plants and animals and then also be able to explore the Ravenel Bridge," McGirth-Singleton says.

Although the Ravenel Bridge is right here in the Lowcounty, she says exploring it would actually be a new experience to many of her students.

"A lot of our children haven't been on the bridge before, they've never driven across it," she says.

Students would walk to the top of the bridge, and then back down.

"We were fortunate last year where we had an officer from the city of Charleston who gave us VIP service. He drove his car as we walked across the sidewalk and he stopped his car so that we could cross the street, and the children all loved that," McGirth-Singleton says.

But taking a trip like this with an elementary school class, isn't that easy. She would need materials to make sure all students are safe.

"We are requesting drawstring backpacks, aluminum water bottles and sun visors," she says.

McGirth-Singleton has made the trip with her class in the past, noting that it was a huge success.

"It's such a wonderful feeling to see them out in the community and paying attention to the things that make Charleston such a historical city," she says.
