CLOVIS, New Mexico (NEWS RELEASE) - On Wednesday, November 27, 2024 Plains Regional Medical Center called into the Clovis Police Dispatch Center to report the death of a 12-month-old toddler. Officers responded to the hospital where they were notified that 12-month-old Calian Skywater had been transported by ambulance to Plains Regional Medical Center - Emergency Room. On arrival at the hospital, Calian was not breathing and life-saving measures were unsuccessful.
Calian had bruising to his forehead and face. When asked about the injuries, the mother explained that Calian had fallen three days prior, causing these injuries. The mother told responding officers that Calian was seen by his pediatric physician for the injuries.
The Clovis Police Department investigates all cases of unattended death, especially in cases of children, toddlers, and infants. Because of the injuries present at the time of the death, the 9th Judicial Major Crimes Unit was activated to assist with this death investigation. Additional information related to the case will not be available until the Office of the Medical Investigator has been able to complete an autopsy and determine the cause and manner of this death.
