NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) -- Cafe Du Monde is back in operation after abruptly closing for the day on Friday.
On Dec. 13, City of New Orleans officials issued a notice to the public to avoid Decatur Street citing traffic caused by "ongoing issues" with the French Market building.
Cafe Du Monde customers were told to get out due to the building shutdown.
"I have come all this way for my beignet. I've been waiting for a long time to walk in that sugar. There's no other place that I have. I have been around the world," said tourist Debby Bailey.
New Orleans Fire Department Superintendent Roman Nelson said the staff noticed an unusual sagging or flexing in roof joints. They went to investigate and found that some of the support rafters had split.
"The roof rafters have also shifted and some splitting on some of the bracing support in there. So, it all looks like new damage," said Nelson.
The French Market Corporation Director KC Guidry said they called for an evacuation out of an abundance of caution.
"There are old buildings. You know, these things happen. It's why we have eyes on things. We are obviously operating in an abundance of caution right now," said Guidry.
Cafe Du Monde officials announced the return to business on Facebook.
"All repairs to the attic in the French Market building have concluded and been approved. Luckily there was no damage to the restaurant and we are OPEN! We thank all those who worked through the night to make this happen so quickly!."
