The 2024 college football season has seen fans in Bloomington, Indiana, go from always looking ahead to the basketball season to now watching their Indiana Hoosiers contend for the College Football Playoff.
After spending five seasons as the head coach of the James Madison Dukes and going 52-9 during that time, first-year Indiana coach Curt Cignetti has hit the ground running in a big way.
The 63-year-old has led Indiana to a 10-0 start to the season, which happens to be the first time the program has ever hit the 10-win mark. While Indiana isn't typically known for being all in on football, Cignetti appears to have changed that.
Ahead of Saturday's Week 12 slate, Action Network's Brett McMurphy reported that the Hoosiers and Cignetti inked a massive eight-year extension that will see him earn $8 million per year.
While some fans think this shows that Indiana is bought in, others think that making a deal like this after just one season is a bit premature.
"Another school with an overreaction to, for now, and undefeated season by signing their HC to a long term contract without a long term resume of winning big at the P4 level," wrote one fan.
"New contract 10 games into his tenure, what could go wrong," commented another.
"For 1 good season? Did they not learn from the FSU mistake," added one fan.
"What could go wrong with giving a dude a contract that large 10 games in," chimed in another.
The eagerness from Indiana isn't too shocking when you consider that the Hoosiers' last nine-win season came in 1967. As for Cignetti, he came into the season ranked No. 49 in terms of head coaches salaries according to USA TODAY.
His new deal launches him into the top 20 of the highest-paid coaches in the sport.
Cignetti and the Hoosiers are off this weekend, but will have the biggest test of his young tenure in Week 13. The No. 5 Hoosiers will be heading to Columbus to take on the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes in a game that will shape the Big Ten race and College Football Playoff.
