Two of the five men who escaped from the Barnett Street Police Station lockup on Saturday have been shot, one of them fatally.
The police said that 42-year-old Edgar Spence, a labourer from Belinda district, Flower Hill, St James, was fatally shot during a confrontation with police, hours after his escape on Saturday morning. Another escapee, Fidel Ferguson, 36, was shot and injured by gunman in Paisley district at around 3 a.m. on Sunday. He has been admitted to hospital under police guard.
Five prisoners, including Spence and Ferguson, escaped from the Barnett Street lockup on Saturday. Spence was in custody awaiting trial for possession of a prohibited weapon, while Ferguson was locked up for larceny of motor vehicle.
Three other escapees remain at large. They are Tyrese Brown, 22, of Albert Town, Trelawny, charged with murder and rape; Daniel McIntosh, 23, of Peddlars Lane, Mount Salem, St James, charged with possession of a prohibited weapon; and Maurice Belnavis, 43, of Greens Paradise, Norwood, St James, charged with simple larceny.
