Cowboy boots help police link Boca Raton man to alleged $3,000 construction burglary

BOCA RATON, Fla. (CBS12) -- A Boca Raton man's footwear may have been his downfall after police say he wore the same cowboy boots to the burglary, a pawn shop, and a police interview.

On January 22, Boca Raton Police (BRPD) say they began investigating a construction burglary that occurred on January 9, at Pirtle Construction near E Palmetto Park Rd and NE Mizner Blvd. in Boca Raton.

A project manager told police that an unknown man, later identified as 61-year-old Rick Stornant, stole six boxes of Kohler shower equipment totaling $3,000 from the warehouse around 8 p.m. by prying open a plywood wall to gain entry.

Police say the suspect was captured on security footage and identified as a white man wearing a dark zip-up hoodie, jeans, gloves, and a unique pair of cowboy boots with buckles.

An initial investigation of pawn transactions involving Kohler products led police to American Pawn on N. Federal Hwy. Additional CCTV footage from the pawn shop was shown to police, which reportedly revealed that a man in cowboy boots who resembled the burglar completed the transaction, according to the criminal probable cause affidavit.

When analyzing the boxes, police noted that the exterior had "M.B." marked on it signaling "master bathroom," which the project manager told police construction team wrote.

On Tuesday, BRPD said Stornant was arrested for an unrelated traffic incident on his moped which the pawn shop security footage showed him leaving in and wearing the same brown cowboy-style boots with buckles.

Detectives say they interviewed Stornant and he confirmed that he went to the pawn shop, but grew quiet when shown footage of the alleged burglary.

Stornant was subsequently booked on counts of burglary, larceny, dealing stolen property, and providing false identification, according to BRPD.
