The rain flooded the O'Neill Tunnel Wednesday night, forcing the Massachusetts Department of Transportation to temporarily shut down the I-90 WB exit 135 off-ramp to I-93. Multiple videos posted to social media showed drivers attempting to navigate the flooded tunnel.
In Brockton, firefighters performed a water rescue after flash flooding overwhelmed a car on Westgate Drive, an area known to be prone to flooding, the department posted on X, the social web site, Wednesday.
Brockton firefighters also had to wade through chest-deep waters Wednesday to help a man who had overdosed at a homeless encampment off Westgate Drive, according to the department's Facebook page.
"Narcan was administered and the patient was extricated through swift-water due to the heavy rain. Firefighters used water exposure suits & safety ropes to safely remove the man," the department posted.
The heavy rainfall was just one impact from the storm system that departed by Thursday morning: Wind gusts across the region surpassed 50 miles an hour and in Plymouth and Barnstable counties, winds were clocked in excess of 60 miles an hour, according to the weather service.
According to the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency, about 2,000 electricity customers spread across Eastern Massachusetts are without power as of 6:45 a.m. Thursday.
Utilities began working Wednesday to repair downed lines, including an Eversource crew that responded to Walpole.
