BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Widespread reports and videos of a fiery trail spotted in the skies over south Louisiana left many wondering what they had witnessed on Saturday night. Was it a comet? Santa doing a test run? Or perhaps, something else? The trail is seen clearly in this video sent in by WAFB viewer Montrice Davis.
There is no official determination as of late Saturday night, but my educated guess is that the trail was 'space junk'. That may leave you asking, what is space junk? NASA says the following about space junk:
"There are millions of pieces of space junk flying in LEO. Most orbital debris comprises human-generated objects, such as pieces of spacecraft, tiny flecks of paint from a spacecraft, parts of rockets, satellites that are no longer working, or explosions of objects in orbit flying around in space at high speeds."
The American Meteor Society maintains a log of 'fireball' reports, or bright meteors. Even though my best guess is that the trail seen on Saturday night was space junk and not a meteor, the AMS site shows is was seen in several southern states, from Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, to perhaps as far north as Tennessee.
