All-Region Volleyball: Incredible local season produces 3 section champions

FAIRFIELD -- The local high school varsity girls volleyball season might have been the best ever.

Three of the six Sac-Joaquin Section championships were won by Solano County schools. Vacaville earned the Division II title; Vanden was the champion in Division III; and Vacaville Christian won the banner in Division VI.

Vacaville finished the season 36-7; Vanden was 26-11; and Vacaville Christian was 24-6. Armijo went 14-11 with Rodriguez 8-6, Buckingham 12-7, Fairfield 4-13 and Wood 6-21. Armijo and Buckingham were also playoff teams.

All three champions are represented on this year's Daily Republic All-Region volleyball team. It's a talented mix of big hitters, setters and backrow defensive specialists.

Here is the individual honors:

Most Valuable Player: Ebony Lewis, Vacaville. Lewis helped lead the Bulldogs to a Monticello Empire League championship and the D-2 crown. The senior outside hitter and opposite had 303 kills, 55 service aces, 37 blocks and 251 digs. She signed a letter-of-intent recently with Cal State San Marcos.

Coach of the Year: Wayne Bucaojit of Armijo. The long-time city volleyball coach had been everywhere but Armijo in his career. This year he took on the Royals and guided them to second place in the new Greater Sacramento League and a playoff berth.

Congratulations also to Jason Balmes (Vacaville), Cindy Scolavino (Vanden) and Alicia Borges (Vacaville Christian) for guiding their teams to section titles.

The Team:

Senior Ariah Isadore of Vanden was listed as an outside hitter, opposite and middle blocker. She had similar numbers to Lewis, finishing with 303 kills, 34 aces, 48 blocks and 174 digs.

Senior setter and opposite Piper Olson of Vanden had an incredible 96 aces to go with 88 kills, seven blocks, 233 digs and 421 assists.

Senior Izzy Taylor of Vanden played outside hitter, opposite and middle blocker. Taylor knocked down 248 kills to go with 54 aces, 52 blocks and 363 digs.

Senior Soph Montano of Vanden played outside hitter, opposite and middle hitter as well. Montano was also a big hitter with 235 kills, 55 aces, 82 blocks and 137 digs.

Ariana Woltz of Vacaville is a senior outside hitter and defensive specialist. She finished with 196 kills, 87 aces, 24 blocks and 149 digs.

Sophomore Ava Duran of Vacaville could play outside hitter, opposite and middle blocker. Duran had 225 kills, 64 aces, 70 blocks and 85 digs.

Senior Olivia Kuch has been a standout at Vacaville Christian since she first stepped on to the campus. She played defensive specialist and middle hitter and had 237 kills, 55 aces, 21 blocks and 127 digs.

Junior setter Hope Ampora of Armijo helped run Bucaojit's offense at Armijo. She had 35 kills, 31 aces, 59 digs and 291 assists.

Senior Ashlee Conlee of Armijo was an outside hitter and middle blocker. She contributed 67 kills, 15 aces, 27 blocks and 24 digs to the Royals.

Junior Aiyanah Polk of Fairfield was listed as an outside hitter, opposite and middle blocker. Polk had 56 kills, 33 aces and 22 digs.

Junior Olivia Apelado, junior Grace Daly and senior Arden Billingsley all earned honors for Rodriguez, though no statistics were made available. Billingsley recently signed a letter-of-intent to play at DePaul University in Chicago.
