Trumbull cop dragged by driver of stolen car fleeing Route 15 stop, police say

TRUMBULL -- A Stamford man is accused of dragging a Trumbull police officer while trying to flee a traffic stop in a stolen vehicle Friday, according to police.

Brian Jacobs, 57, is charged with engaging police in pursuit, assault on a police officer, interfering with an officer, possession of a controlled substance, use of drug paraphernalia and illegal operation under the influence, Trumbull police said in a Facebook post.

According to police, the Trumbull officer spotted a Toyota Tacoma that had been reported to Fairfield police as having been taken without the owner's permission, heading south on Route 15. The officer stopped the vehicle on the highway, police said in the post, and as he approached the Tacoma to apprehend the driver, the truck fled the scene, dragging the officer for a "short distance" before he was knocked to the ground.

The officer got back into his vehicle and chased the man onto Main Street and was able to apprehend him near Quality Street at about 10:30 a.m. Friday, according to the post. The man, identified as Jacobs, was found with crack cocaine and drug paraphernalia at the time of his arrest, according to police.

Jacobs was held in lieu of a $50,000 bond on the Trumbull charges and is to appear at Superior Court in Bridgeport Dec. 6, the post said.

Trumbull EMS responded to the scene and brought the Trumbull officer to St. Vincent's Hospital in Bridgeport with minor injuries, according to the post.

Fairfield police Capt. Antonio Granata said Jacobs also is charged with illegal use of a credit card and use of a motor vehicle without the owner's consent following a complaint from a Fairfield company where Jacobs works. Granata said the credit card and vehicle linked to Jacobs' charges belong to his employer.

Granata said police received a report at about 9:35 a.m. and told neighboring towns to monitor for the vehicle. He said Fairfield police officers responded to Trumbull after Jacobs' encounter with the police officer there and arrested him on the motor vehicle and credit card charges. He said Jacobs was released on a promise to appear in court at his Dec. 6 hearing.
